Geographic Information System
GIS is an informational system capable of integrating, storing, analyzing and managing
data which are spatially referenced to Earth. The WVDOT utilizes GIS for planning,
analysis, and mapping. In addition, GIS is being established as an enterprise
system capable of integrating and spatially enabling various legacy databases throughout
the WVDOT. The key component to make this happen is based on the WVDOT Linear
Referencing System. This simply put is the milepost along side of the roads;
this has been the traditional method of locating asset or incident on roads.
By integrating this information into our GIS, we are able to establish an enterprise
system (See diagram below).
